Pupil Premium
The Government believes the Pupil Premium, which is additional to core school funding, is the most effective way to address inequalities between pupils eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their more affluent peers. The funding is allocated to schools to raise the attainment of pupils from low-income families and those who have been in care for more than six months.
Schools have the freedom to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, as they are best placed to identify the support needed by individual pupils. However, they are held accountable for how the funding is used. Schools must publish information on their use of the Pupil Premium, and pupil outcomes are monitored through performance measures to ensure transparency and impact.
