WORLD BOOK DAY. We had the theatre company M&M Productions in school showing The Hunchback of Notre Dame, our theme this year is “diversity and being unique”. The children were invited to dress up as a book character, a person who triumphed despite adversity, or just as their unique selves, e.g. Abraham Lincoln – lost 8 times before becoming president of the USA; J K Rowling – had 12 book rejections; the Wright brothers – 2 failed attempts at flying. |

COLLECTION ARRANGEMENTS. Can we remind parents that we need written consent of who is allowed to collect your child from school. Safeguarding procedures mean we cannot take instructions over the telephone, or use a code word. A record of who is allowed to collect is kept in the office and classroom. Please update any changes at the school office. Please be aware that if anybody who is not on the list comes to collect your child, we will not allow your child to go with them. |

Cantrell Reading Challenge - Remember to read at home everyday! |
||
CANTRELL’S TOP TEN REASONS WHY WE READ! Reading makes you cleverer. Reading is a complex task for children’s brains – much more complex than watching TV, or playing an online game. Reading strengthens your child’s brains connections and builds NEW connections. Reading promotes achievement in all subjects, not just English, so if your child is a good reader, they are more likely to achieve better across the whole curriculum. Reading makes you happier. Research shows us that children who read books regularly are, on average, more satisfied with life, happier, and more likely to feel the things they do in life are worthwhile. A book does not take up much space in your child’s bag and is light to carry, so they can take one anywhere they go. Your child can never be bored if they have a book in their bag.Reading improves concentration Children have to sit still and quietly so that they can focus on the story when they are reading. If your child reads often, they will develop the skill to do this for longer.Reading teaches children about the world around them. Through reading a variety of books, children learn about people, places, and events outside of their own experience. Everything your child reads fills their head with new bits of information, and you never know when it might come in handy. The more knowledge they have, the better-equipped they are to tackle any challenge they’ll ever face.Reading improves vocabulary and language skills Children learn new words as they read. The more your child reads, the more words they gain exposure to, which will inevitably make their way into their everyday vocabulary. Vocabulary is one of the biggest indicators of academic achievement and success in later school life.Reading develops a child's imagination. As children read, their brains translate the descriptions they read of people, places and things into pictures. While children are engaged in a story, they are also imagining how a character is feeling. Children then bring this knowledge into their everyday play. The more your child reads, the more imaginative and creative they will be.Reading helps you relax. Reading is a great way of escaping from the stresses and strains of day-to-day life! A story can transport your child to other realms, letting tensions drain away and allowing them to relax. Reading has been shown to lower blood pressure and bring about an immense sense of calm. |
||
Reading is a great way to spend time together. Research shows us just how important reading can be as a way of bonding with your child. Snuggling up to read together on the sofa, bedtime stories and visiting the library are just some of the ways that you can enjoy spending time together with your children while reading.Reading helps children to develop empathy. As children read, they learn to empathise with characters that they like and care about. They begin to have feelings for situations they read about in stories such as happiness, sadness, anger, frustration or excitement. Reading regularly helps your child learn to understand these and other emotions, and to develop the social skills needed to forge positive relationships with others. |
